Catwings Return is the second book in a short children’s fantasy series by Ursula K. Le Guin, which follows two of the beloved winged cats from the first book as they return to the inner-city neighbourhood they had fled as kittens, seeking to find their mother again.
This story features both daring adventures and the comfort and feeling of safety that comes with loving family and true friends. The same series also includes Catwings (1988), Wonderful Alexander and the Catwings (1994), and Jane on Her Own (1988).
Although written many years ago, this classic mostly stands the test of time, with the minor exception that the gender roles of the various characters are somewhat stereotypical (the brave boy cat and maternal girl cat), though still multifaceted. Readers will love this story; they’ll dream of winged cats and wake up requesting more Catwings.
