Luca is a young sea monster who has always been a little curious about humans, but his parents have told him they are too dangerous. When Luca befriends another young sea monster, Alberto, they quickly become interested in exploring the human world together. With new friends, Luca must push past the boundaries of the world he knows in a quest to learn more about the wider world, and himself.
Although it's set in 1959 in Genoa, Italy, Luca has a timelessness that makes it easy to relate to. Luca is a coming-of-age movie where the protagonist balances his own desire for freedom, knowledge, and self-discovery with the wishes of his family. Similar themes are explored in Pixar films Coco (2017) and Turning Red (2022), which viewers of Luca may also enjoy.
