What does it mean to love? Continuing the work of Rookie (2011-2018), an online magazine aimed at teenage girls, editor Tavi Gevinson has assembled a wonderful collection of essays, interviews, and poetry from a diverse array of authors to tackle the subject of love.
The book contains it all: transgender rights activist Janet Mock offers the advice of self-love in “How to Deal with Rejection;” indie artist Mitski writes about her non-human love affair with music in “Centripetal Force;” while Rookie reader-turned-writer Victoria Chiu finds the power in ‘taking things slow’ in the essay “Under Pressure.” Although some contributions are perhaps a little too wordy and read like academic papers, Rookie on Love is an anthology that respects the emotional intelligence and capacity for change within its teenage readership.
