It's WWII, and Tom lives in the Netherlands, which is currently being occupied by German soldiers. Tom has a German Shepherd named Scout, who has an amazing tracking ability. This ability ends up causing serious problems as Tom encounters a downed English airman and a little Jewish girl. Tom and Scout give them refuge in the treacherous swamps that surround his home, but will he be able to keep them hidden and bring them to safety?
This book is intended for young teens, but all teens would be engaged with the content. It is well written, making it an easy afternoon read. There is nothing graphic, but it is a war story that provides enough tension to make it appealing. From a historical standpoint, it is accurate, although some may be turned off by the subliminal messages about having faith and trust in God when all else seems hopeless.
