Narrated by Death, this book follows a young girl sent to live with a German family during WW2, following her as she grows up and learns about the nature of the world and the importance that books hold within it.

The Book Thief bares similarity to several works of fiction about WW2 and the holocaust, though it differs in its heavy use of symbolism. It’s choice in narrator and style may distract readers who prefer more realistic historical fiction.

The book is compelling, with a large cast, and philosophical prose that can keep all readers, young and old alike, fully engaged.
