Murder at the Hotel Hopeless tells the story of Charlie Hope living at the Hotel Hope in Vancouver Canada, which is owned and operated by his mother who is struggling to keep it afloat. Charlie tells us he has been tasked with babysitting a spoiled (in Charlie’s perspective) child actor, Penny Price, at the hotel, before his friend Mr. Ignato is killed. Charlie and Penny team up to try to track down who killed Mr. Ignato, who others believed had died by an accident.

The story keeps readers hooked through small twists in uncovering the story and growing relationships of the characters involved and is a good choice as a Hi/Lo book as it has an interesting story without complex language or writing. It’s targeted as a young adult fiction, but the story development may be a bit too simplistic and predictable for older teenagers, and it seems a more appropriate audience would be pre-teens and young teenagers. Overall, a pleasant read for younger teen readers who are starting to get interested in the murder mystery genre of novels.
