Starr Carter feels like she has to be two different people: one in her black neighbourhood and the other at her mostly white private school. When Starr witnesses a police officer murder her friend during a traffic stop, her two worlds begin to collide. Starr must reconcile the two parts of her and find her voice in the search for social justice.
Based on Angie Thomas’ award-winning book, The Hate U Give gives a good text-to-screen representation. Although the screenplay is, of course, a condensed version of the novel, all modifications made are still in service to the story being told. As always, the book is better and more in depth, but Audrey Wells created a great on-screen representation. Amandla Stenberg, who plays Starr, and Russell Hornsby, who plays her father, also give an amazing performance.
