A Thousand Beginnings and Endings explores fables and folklore not typically portrayed to mainstream readers: Roshani Choksi retraces the Filipino legend of a guardian mountain spirit in “Forbidden Fruit;” Aisha Saed conjures a forbidden love story of Pakistan in “The Smile;" and Julie Kagawa invokes folkloric Japanese fox spirit in “Eyes Like Candlelight.” Each story is lovingly crafted. Some may get more mileage from particular stories over others, but throughout the fifteen unique shorts, there ought to be something in this book for every kind of reader.
